The great sailboats soon in Toulon harbour

The program of the Tall Ships Regatta

The Mayor and numerous institutional partners presented the international naval event expected in Toulon late September.

"It will be this year's event in the Var department" exclaimed the Mayor during the presentation of the mythical tall ships race which will call in at Toulon from 27th to 30th September. In 2007, Toulon, the first French southern harbour to welcome the race, stood out as the best stopover city.

A success that T.P.M. conglomeration intends to renew with the quality of the welcome shown and the activities offered to the hundreds of thousands of visitors expected for this naval event of international scope.

New in 2013 : board the time of a stopover

In September, for the only French stopover of the race, almost 40 exceptional sailboats representing some 18 nationalities will come to Toulon. The harbour will be especially fitted to welcome the Belem in particular, the famous 48m long three-masted French ship or the Krusenstern, the 124 m long Russian boat, presented like "one of the greatest sailing vessels of the world" by Amiral Gérard Gachot who coordinates the event.

The public will be invited to board the ships free of charges and will also have the opportunity of sailing for a day for one or two stopovers (chargeable service).

The "carré du port", "Quai Fournel", "quai de la Corse" and, exceptionally, the "quai d'Honneur" of the French Navy naval base will be made accessible to the visitors. The Mayor underlined the importance of a celebration in a spirit of security thanks to the mobilization of the services placed under the authority of maritime Prefect Yann Tainguy and Prefect Laurent Cayrel.

4 days of celebrations and free entertainments

450 volunteers will assist the sailors and the public all along the event. The arrival by sea of the three-masted schooners, the four-masted boats, ketchs and brigantines in les Vignettes bay then in small bay will mark the beginning of the festivities on Friday, September 27th. Toulon City will then follow the rythm of the numerous shows ans entertainments organized around the race.

Demonstrations and nautical jousts in le Mourillon neighbourhood and in Vieille Darse, concerts, sound and lights shows on the squares downtown and the quays, tournaments and great crew parades (2,000 sailors), but also seaplanes and microlights displays will delight children and grown-ups.

On Sunday night, a great firework lit from the bay will close the event. Finally, on Monday, September 30th, the sailboats will set sails to go to Porquerolles where the start of the race is planned at about 5 pm heading off to La Spezia.
