Parks and gardens
Thanks to the policy led by the municipality since 2001, the city won the "3 flowers" award in the flowery cities contest. Among 84 parks, public gardens and gardens which strew the city centre and its neighbourhoods, more than half were completely rehabilitated. With 100 flower zones and 500ha of municipal green spaces of which 108 fitted out in the urban zone, Toulon City deserves its title of a "green city".
Among the most remarkable parks, Alexandre 1st garden situated in the city centre shelters plane trees, oaks, chestnut trees or tree in ecus. There, conifers and palm trees reign over 16,000 m2 between playgrounds, a bandstand and a period pond. Pré Sandrin garden, the biggest park in the city (2ha), shares its space between plane trees, locust trees, hundred-year-old ginkgoes and stretches of water. Nested in front of le Mourillon beaches, the zoological garden pours a luxuriant vegetation of cacti and bougainvilleas lining playgrounds, tennis courts and sculptures. As for the much wooded Birds park, it gathers pigeons, turtledoves, blackbirds or thrushes in the shade of Aleppo pines and wild lilacs.
