La tour Royale
La Tour Royale belonged to the French Navy before being purchased by the city of Toulon in 2006. It is one of today's historical jewels belonging to the heritage of the city.
Its construction was finished in 1524, supervised by the Italian engineer della Porta. It has been classified a "Historical Monument" since April 11th, 1947.
The building is situated near the small Pipady beach (open to the public since summer, 2010) and the dike splitting the two bays, in the entrance of the port. Unique in France due to its impressive dimensions (60m diameter), the building, for a long time known by Toulon Inhabitants as the Grosse tour (Big Tower), is open free of charge to the public from June till September.
Visitors have the opportunity to discover arched bunkers, tanks, powder magazines, ammunitions spaces and prisons, all symbols of this military work which sheltered the gold reserves of the bank of France during the 1870 war!
